American Indian Studies Program Research Initiatives:  THE USDA ECONOMIC RESEARCH SERVICE RESEARCH INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT GRANTS IN ECONOMICS (RIDGE) GRANT PROGRAM

The American Indian Studies Program (AISP) in collaboration with the Native Peoples Technical Assistance Office (NPTAO) at The University of Arizona is one of five academic/research centers engaged in partnership with the USDA Economic Research Service to stimulate new and innovative research on food assistance and nutrition issues.  Since 1998, the AISP/NPTAO RIDGE (Research Innovation and Development Grants in Economics) Program has worked with scholars at tribal colleges and other institutions to support research on the unique issues and challenges faced by Native Americans with respect to loss of traditional life-ways, food assistance and commodity programs, and nutrition-related health issues.  The RIDGE Program seeks to stimulate new and innovative research on food assistance and nutrition issues and to broaden the participation of social science scholars in these issues.  RIDGE grants last for one to two years; most are in the range of $20,000 to $40,000.
