The University of Arizona
Master of Arts in American Indian Studies
Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Arts Program in American Indian Studies at The University of Arizona. As a Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, AIS seeks to develop through research and scholarship a wide scope of understanding of indigenous peoples of the Americas – their languages, cultures, traditions, and sovereignty. This two year academic research-oriented degree program provides a unique opportunity for students and scholars to explore issues critically important to American Indian nations and communities locally, statewide, and nationally.
Each year, AIS receives a significant number of applications from an accomplished group of individuals from various professions with extensive backgrounds and experience. Accordingly, admissions is a rigorous process and candidate selection is highly competitive. Though the admissions committee carefully considers each item in the application packet, special deliberation is made in assessment of your academic record, writing samples, personal statement of intent to our program, and recommendation letters. Only application packets completed by the deadline will be reviewed and considered for admission. AIS Masters Degree application information is provided.
Your acceptance by the Graduate College and by American Indian Studies will ensure your file is automatically considered for the financial aid available as a student of AIS. Funding sources include: the Graduate Teaching Assistantship Award, the Graduate Tuition Waiver Award, and the Graduate Registration Waiver Award. Based on merit, these awards are made by the AIS Financial Award Committee. Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee funding for every student. Students selected for financial aid from AIS will be sent an award letter.
If you have further questions, please call our office Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at (520) 621-7108 or email us at aisp@u.arizona.edu. We would be happy to speak with you about your graduate education goals. Thank you for your interest and best wishes in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
American Indian Studies (AIS)
